Artists for Media Diversity (A4MD), in collaboration with Media Alliance (MA) and the Latino Public Radio Consortium (LPRC), re-released a digital song collection to help rebuild Radio Vieques in Puerto Rico after hurricane María.
“Artists for Vieques” includes songs by recording artists from Puerto Rico, Texas, Oklahoma, North Carolina and the Navajo Nation, such as Willie Nelson and Calle 13.
Radio Vieques (WVQR) is a non commercial radio station and a member of the LPRC. It provides essential communication and community organizing services for Puerto Rico’s two island municipalities — Culebra and Vieques — as well as the eastern half of the main island. Hurricane winds damaged the station’s equipment and facilities. Radio Vieques was off the air for some time, but they are broadcasting and live streaming once again.
The digital album was first published in 2013 to help raise funds to create Radio Vieques. Now it’s meant to help rebuild a Public Radio Station in Vieques island.
“Solidarity from organizations like A4MD, MA and the Latino Public Radio Consortium is crucial to get Radio Vieques back on the air to help our community rebuild and recover”, said WVQR Director, Roberto Rabin.
“This time we are adding three new songs from other performers who, like all of us, are deeply moved by the devastating impact of Hurricane María in Puerto Rico”, said Barbara Kooyman, founder and co-director of Artists for Media Diversity.
The list of participating artists includes: Willie Nelson, Calle 13, Zoraida Santiago, Los Lonely Boys, Rei Ortiz, Antonio Caban Vale and Los Bandidos Cosmicos, among many others. The song compilation is be available online.

“We have been working on many fronts to get public media stations in Puerto Rico back up and running,” explained LPRC Station Services Manager, Ileana Rivera. “It is great to see how this project, which played a crucial role in making Radio Vieques a reality, is now also part of the station’s rebuilding and Puerto Rico’s recovery.”
The 2017-2018 reissue of “Artists For Vieques” is made possible through a collaboration with A4MD, the LPRC and Media Alliance. “We are committed to diversifying voices in the media and we need more outlets like Radio Vieques to stay strong,” said Tracy Rosenberg, MA Executive Director.
The compilation will be distributed on a revenue-sharing basis with half of the proceeds going directly to Radio Vieques.
